Ever since my journey with estrogen dominance and adrenal fatigue, I have been slowly transitioning to non-toxic personal care and household products to help my body balance hormones better.
What do personal care products have to do with hormone balance?
Estrogen dominance is a hormonal imbalance where estrogen levels are high relative to progesterone and testosterone. For me, it was likely caused by chronic stress, which depletes progesterone levels and leads to adrenals working over time producing the stress hormone, cortisol¹.
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals found in our everyday lives that mimic our natural hormones and can also wreck havoc on our body’s natural ecosystem. One category of endocrine disruptors, xenoestrogens, can play a huge role in estrogen dominance as they mimic estrogen in the body creating an artificial rise in levels.
Common sources of xenoestrogens include plastics containing BPA, parabens in skincare products, insectides found on many foods, and chemicals in household products¹ ². Xenoestrogens have been linked to many other negative health consequences with repeated and frequent exposure, so by slowly switching my products to more natural ones where I can, I am also minimizing my exposure to these harmful chemicals.
Sleep is the foundation of holistic health
I advocate for sleep as one of the foundational pillars of holistic health and I know that many people struggle with good sleep.
Something that I teach my clients to do is a form of environmental self-care, where you create the most relaxing environment that you can to prepare for sleep and try to hit all the senses. Including the sense of smell!
You can do this by lighting a non-toxic candle, diffuse calming essential oils, or use something like this pillow spray to create subtle soothing aromas in your sleep cave.
Other uses
Because this spray just smells so good, I’ve actually found myself using it on my pillow, as a body spray, linen spray and sometimes I even give my gym bag or car a few spritz’s to give it a natural fragrance*.
*I caution you to patch test a small area of any fabrics you are spraying this on. I am not responsible for any possible negative outcomes.
